Warm + Welcoming Foyer

From the handsome original paneling, to the ornate anaglypta wallpaper panels, to the show-stopping stained glass window on the grand staircase — the foyer of this traditional Craftsman home had a ton of charming character to begin with. But it was still in need of a little TLC.

The first order of business was to shore up some of the cracking wall liner and deteriorating plaster. Then, a new skim coat of tinted Venetian plaster was added, followed by hand-burnishing to create a slight iridescence when the walls are viewed from certain angles. Minor repairs also helped to improve the condition of the stairs, paneling, and the original pocket door.

To capitalize on the natural light brought in through the leaded glass on the front door, sidelites, and transom, the laminated vinyl plank flooring was upgraded to a bright white and gray mosaic tile in a traditional diamond and hexagon motif. A bold pop of burgundy paint helped to unify the foyer’s mismatched wooden elements, while a custom plaid stair runner added a fun and unexpected pattern to the mix.

A brass leaning mirror, leather bench, marble and iron coat tree, and carved teak Chinoiserie sideboard added style and function to the space. Updated lighting, custom framed artwork, vintage décor pieces, and plenty of greenery made up the finishing touches.

Welcome home!
