Modern Rustic Kitchen

When a growing young family purchased this Squirrel Hill home, it was clear that the kitchen had been neglected for several years. It was dated, small, and visually cut off from the rest of the home — including an adjacent eat-in space. As avid cooks and entertainers, they wanted a bright and cheerful kitchen that not only functioned well, but could become a central hub for their day-to-day lives.

With some reconfiguring of the appliance and cabinet layout — including the removal of a partial wall — we were able to open the space to add more useable counter surface, plenty of storage, and an eat-in peninsula with room to gather with family and friends.

The materials palette was inspired by one of the client’s favorite pieces of art — a New Mexican landscape by Georgia O’Keeffe. From the hammered copper range hood and textured backsplash tile, to the woven leather counter stools and natural rope pendants, the end result is a modern rustic space with tons of warmth and character.

This project was a collaboration with Studio 1049.
